Ultimate RPG Madness

Postby Jim North » Thu Mar 25, 2010 7:19 pm

Every once in a great while, someone will ask a question about or otherwise mention role-playing games. Figured we might as well have a thread for it like we have a thread for everything else, even if this one will be perpetually covered in a thick layer of dust.

So, that Shadowrun game is pretty cool, huh?

I was in a pretty awesome shadowrun campaign. Every session was pretty much just a series of completely fucking awesome moments. We had Scan (my paranoid investigator), Zeke (a gunslinging adept who could kill pretty much anything), and Mal (the face and smartest member). Awesome moments include:

Breaking into a slave auction where we set the slaves free, get the information we want and start to leave. Mal pulls out this massive grenade and says "Gentlemen, this is a place where you bid on human lives, isn't it? Well start the bidding." After a bunch of people throw us their credsticks we leave, tossing the grenade into the room behind us as we go.

After finding out an organization of child snuff films we finally get to the leader of the place, some punk gangleader. Scan sits down to play poker with him, eventually getting him to admit he is the leader. Scan kicks the table into him and starts to beat the shit out of the guy while everyone is in a gunfight with his guards. The guy passes out twice but Scan keeps waking him up to keep beating the shit out of him. Eventually Scan props him against a wall and pulls a sword and swings it across his neck. Mal catches the head and tosses it to the last remaining living guard and says "Looks like your organization needs a new head."

We start to fight a man who proclaims himself to be a demon since only weapons and bullets made of a certain material can hit him. We each have a golden gun and a single golden bullet. I special requested my bullet. As soon as the fight starts I duck behind a corner and start to assemble my sniper rifle, a gun so big it takes three turns to put together. Zeke shoots him with his normal pistol and the man shrugs it off laughing hysterically. Then Zeke shoots the monster with the golden gun and bullet which takes the things arm clean off. The monster freaks out, but when Mals shot misses and Zeke is only hitting with normal bullets the man gets his evil groove back, smacking the two of them around like ragdolls. Then Zeke pistol whips him in the face, severely wounding the monster. The man falls back, yelling that he'll return stronger than ever, then in the distance he hears "No you won't," As Scan fires the golden bullet from the sniper rifle, tearing the villain apart.
Tell me a story baby.
I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But I've bought a big bat. I'm all ready you see. Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!

Oh man. Have I got some stories about Star Wars campaigns.

There is no way I'm going to give a full recount (right now) but the abridged version is as follows.

I am a Droid in the employ of a Jedi who was in charge of an apprentice (taken from some sith dude or something) named Rike and a Clone Trooper. (Technically there were 2 but one guy never managed to show up to play) We were sent to convince the current Hutt of the clone wars era to cease trade with the separatists. Well our Jedi does all the talking, but he has a short fuse before he goes from diplomatic to making threats. Much fighting ensues 3 of us (Rike was outside in the Speeder) against 10+ Scroundrels, Bounty Hunters, Soldiers and whathaveyou. Obviously we were losing...badly. We start making a retreat to the door, but we aren't going to make it, so the Jedi gets on the comm and yells "Rike! Drive the Speeder through the wall!" Rike being the most literal fucktwat there is does just that. He crashes through the wall at full speed and is thrown unconscious from the speeder across the room bleeding out. Cue an argument with the GM of "WTF" that we didn't instruct Rike to jump out at the last second he didn't (and honestly wouldn't have he is that dumb). Whatever we roll with it (while laughing hysterically for minutes on end) the battle has basically just halted because everyone involved is just looking around completely dumbfounded by such an act of desperation and stupidity, the Hutt decides that we are crazy enough motherfuckers that he'll cease his trading just to appease us.

Annnnd that campaign continues thusly in a downward spiral until we just fuck it up soooooo much we started a new one.
No, you're the silly one.

I was GMing a Shadowrun game in which the PCs got involved in a shootout with a gang. One of the players (the one I partially based Rabid off of for my webcomic) runs up to one of the gangers, a grenade in hand. He pulls the pin on the grenade, then holds it out in front of him. The ganger, noticing that he's still holding the safety lever down, grabs his hand tightly in hers, and the two of them began a struggle to keep him from dropping the grenade.

About the only thing the PC was actually good at was explosives, so effectively taking himself out of the fight wasn't too big a deal. The chick he was wrangling with, however, had the best weapon of anyone in the opposing gang (an assault rifle, the rest had pistols), and the nearby gangers who noticed what they were fighting over bugged out as quickly as they could.

All in all, a strangely effective strategy.

I've been running (and working on creating) a d20 RPG based on the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe which has been a total blast to GM so far. I've managed to challenge my PCs with mutants, radiation, bandits and plenty of other bizarre hazards in the Ukranian wasteland without maiming or killing them so far!

If you're interested, I've uploaded some of the material I've been working on - its very, very in-progress and full of holes but you might find it interesting.

I may have to check that out. The Stalker setting is quite nice.

Oh yea they ran those for M:tG a bit ago, never got 'em.

HEY! QUESTION! I guess Jim would be the best to answer but since Nolan has Kharne quotes in his sig it could all work out even better.

Any of you get to play the Dark Heresy rpg? I'm gonna be playing this summer and I've heard it's good but I don't really know the extent to which that's true. I know it's on a d10 system which looked really bad-ass and simple. So, yea.

It's simple as that, it's simple as that, it's simple as that for your stupid ass.

God dammit, no. I really want to, but the handbook is so bloody expensive. I do have a friend however who I believe has played a Forum campaign on SA and said it was pretty fun.

You'll have to detail your heretic murdering adventures here for us(me?) to read.

Edit: Kharn, no "e". I blame Khorne, since it's the same after a slight vowel switch plus an "e".

Haha, yea was thinking of Khorne. Well in this case, I'll definitely tell you all about it.

Thanks Jim, you're no help.

Is there any other way I can act as an obstruction for you today? There's lots of other stuff that I don't know and/or haven't done. I'm a veritable font of non-information!

I think you're good for now. Most of my hopes and dreams were resting on that answer and you've snuffed all of it in one fell swoop. How efficient of you.
