Matt's Game Blogamado

Postby Matador » Mon Feb 08, 2010 3:53 pm

You can find my blog at StoryMo.de, where I talk about storytelling in games.

[Original Post]
I've mentioned it recently, but I'm trying to get a blog rolling. I'm calling it GiLGaL, which is short for Games in Literature; Games as Literature. It's basically going to be a critical blog about game design and storytelling. I'm going to use it as an outlet for ideas I've been storing up. Right now I'm jut jumping off of the conversations and lectures from Art History of Games, but I'm going to post an article on writing female characters in games [spoiler: I'll discuss Death Proof and Chrono Trigger and make decent use of Television Tropes.]

So far I have two posts; one article and one link dump to articles I think should be shared. I'd appreciate it if you guys checked it out.

You appreciate that it sounds more like you're a girl who really likes the Zelda series' form of in-game currency right? Unless you're playing with sexuality in the internet or something, then you know, whatever.

It's simple as that, it's simple as that, it's simple as that for your stupid ass.

Zelda is Rupees. Matt is a girl who loves Final Fantasy money.
I'm not really working on anything at the moment, but here's a link to my tumblr anyway.

I can stop using the acronym if you'd like. Has anyone read my first article? I'd really like some critique...

I knew it was one of those vidja game things.

Matt I'm just saying it doesn't convey what you seem to want it to. I'll look at the article though.

edit:
You should really go back over and proof-read the article. I understand you're just putting ideas to "paper" but I assume you want this to be at least some sort of reference or guide to your thoughts on something that is clearly important to you. Therefore I'd say just one or two passes would do it some good and make it easier to understand.

I've been fleshing the site out with new content. Anyone interested in how it's progressing?

It's always interesting to read a well-thought out opinion.

In your article on casts being played, you mention a talk by Iroquois Pliskin. Isn't this just a pseudonym for solid snake?

Dave Pliskin is the pseudonym. Iriquois is [I'm assuming] a Pseudonym for one of the speakers for Art Game Sessions at GDC.

But thanks for actually reading it.

Isn't his real name David, and the pseudonym is Iroquois Pliskin?

Anyway.

Yeah, there's some interesting stuff in there, and you got me thinking about the whole more than one main character thing.

Did a litle bit of poking about and found his blog, Versus CluCluLand. His name is Wes Erdelack.

And thanks. I like to kick ideas like that around in the hopes that someone will pick it up. If it becomes a trend, I'm hoping to get in on the ground floor.

Edit: Asked Michael Abbot of Brainy Gamer to critique my current content. He seems to like where I'm going, but wants me to to go a bit more in depth.

Working on a new article. I'm trying to build on the idea that the Indiana Jones Vingette is a perfect model for game tutorials.

Trying to consolidate a bunch of the articles I've bookmarked over the years into a resource others can use. I've got a bunch of the stuff I've already organized on there. I'm working on attribution and sample paragraphs at the moment. Once I have those up I'll start on the books I want to recommend.

If anyone wants to start pulling paragraphs or quotes from the articles I've already listed, that would be awesome.
