I want to propose to my girlfriend and I have a few ideas, but the internet is a vast resource and I want to get ideas from as many people as possible! So, if you have an interesting proposal idea, I'd love to hear it (and you can be sure that I'll post a reply here if I actually use one of them..).

To be honest, I kinda like this one. But it shouldn't be turned into a joke. You could put something up over the bed and right when she climbs in and looks at the ceiling shed see it and while shes looking at it making sure shes not just seeing things, you can climb out of bed and get down on one knee even!

I've always been a fan of the mountain/wine/sunset scene.

When my sister got engaged it was a few days before Christmas on a black sand beach in Hawaii. My sister likes collecting shells, so brother-in-law snuck it into a seashell one night. That was romantic.

Not that I expect you to take your girlfriend to Hawaii. Their trip there was a bit of good fortune involving conferences at an opportune time. In terms of timing, look for special occasions where she's already in a romantic mood so you can do sappy stuff without making her suspicious. And in terms of special presentations, it depends on what she likes and what her interests are.

Also, I've heard bad stories about putting it in food. It's classic, but you want to be careful. And if you decide to go with the skywriters, keep an eye on the weather reports.

Last bit of advice, it doesn't have to be fancy. You can take her out for a nice evening and provided it goes well and she's in a good mood, you can go down on one knee and show her the ring. The grand gesture is still nice, if you get it right. Whatever feels best to you.
