Sam and Fuzzy Q & A: New Site Edition
Got a question you want answered? Just drop me an email with "Q & A" in the subject line!
"I really like the new site! But what happened to the old 'save your place' bookmark feature?" -Heather
That feature has actually been gone for a while! I liked it, but unfortunately the plugin had a security vulnerability which someone used to briefly hack the site, and we had to give it the heave ho. But I'm open to adding a similar feature in the future if I can find a new, more secure plugin.
"What made you decide to use color in the new website design? I know it isn't much, but even that bit of red is more than we've seen before." -Onlyfollowingyou
When Sam and Fuzzy first launched, this website housed the comic strip and absolutely nothing else. So making the site design in black and white to match the strip seemed like an interesting and striking thing to do!
But over the years, I've started making a lot of colour content, too -- other comics, and shirts, and books, and ebooks, and a broad array of other things that I either want to share with you guys or need to plug. On the old black and white site, I felt like those elements felt a little intrusive.
So for the new site, I decided to leave things mostly monochromatic, but weave a single colour element throughout the design, to tie the colour bits and the black and white bits together. I think that, combined with adding a lot of extra empty space around the comic to give it more room to breathe, makes things feel a lot more balanced.
"Is it just me or are the comics smaller on the new site?" -David
It's just you! (Well, not just you, because a few people asked this question!) The comics are exactly the same size, using the same image files they always have. However, they might just feel smaller because the site is wider overall, and because they are placed in a larger, more open space than before. In other words, I just pulled off the world's least interesting optical illusion. Tada!
We return on Monday with our next comic. See you then!
