Sam and Fuzzy Q & A:  Flashback Edition

"I love the current story arc!  Did you intend to return to the taxi episodes of Sam and Fuzzy via the ninja mafia from the beginning, or is the taxi/ninja mafia connection something that happened later?"-Emilie

Sort of! The plan was to eventually revisit the "classic" era of the strip via Hazel, and use her perspective to reveal new information about older characters and events. But when I was first conceiving this flashback story, this particular chunk was not one of the driving forces behind it.

Some of the reveals in this story are very important to the future of the Sam and Fuzzy storyline, and those ones -- along with some key charater beats -- are the reason why this flashback story exists. But others are just a fun side bonus. Getting to see the exact circumstances that led to Sam and Fuzzy delivering the band and being attacked by the Ninja Mafia in the original story is one of those latter things. It was important to show mainly because of how the loss of the band affects Hazel's behaviour in the rest of the story.

"Is Candice going to turn up in one of these flashbacks?" -David

I think it is probably not a spoiler to say yes to this. I mean, we know her and Hazel have met... we just don't know exactly when and how. Rest assured that, yes, we will know both those things eventually! But I'm not saying when!

"I don't think I've ever seen a pin-up art book with men in it before. Not that I mind, but what made you decide to include them?" -C

I really like pin-up art, but I find a lot of pin-up art collections get a little... repetitive? Like, a lot of similar drawings of similar looking people in similar poses, page after page. I want my books to be as diverse as I can make em... I think it's more interesting that way! I am by no means perfect at this, but I try as best I can to "cast" them with a really broad array of characters, both in terms of physical appearance and personality (and I try to emphasize the later really heavily). I also try to cover a really broad array of tones, from traditional sexy pin-up stuff to more goofy or comedic or style-driven pieces.

And yes, I try to do some stuff with dudes as well! It's only a minority of the pieces, so I don't think I'm striking some major blow for equal opportunity objectification or anything. But I think it gives the book a friendlier, less-exclusory vibe when everyone is participating. Or, I dunno... maybe doing my best to draw a few hot dudes is just what it takes for me to feel cool about also drawing a bunch of sexy ladies. But hey! It's a Sam and Fuzzy-themed book, and there are a lot of male characters... it would feel weird to exclude them!

Witness me

I have begun digging into The Witness, and so far I'm really enjoying it! It's a hard game to talk about without spoiling anything, but, uh... there is an island, there are maze puzzles, and there are relationships between the two of them that are very interesting. I don't think I've ever beaten a 40+ hour game in my life, so I don't know how likely it is that I'll ever seen the end of it. But I'll do my best!

Fust and Farious

For reasons that are hard to explain, I've been working my way through every single Fast & Furious movie this past week while I've been working. Up until now, I'd never seen a single one of them. What a tragedy that was!  I feel like I'm learning a lot about speed and anger and the (apparently frequent) times in which they intersect.

Thanks for all the kind words about the new pin-up book, team! I'm never sure how people will react to S&F side projects, but I felt like I was on to something with this one. I've enjoyed reading all your comments... particularly enjoyed hearing which character's act people liked the most! So far, Jess and Y are in the lead, which is a strong vote for pirates and anime magic.

In all the plugging last week, I forgot to mention there's a version of the book that comes with a custom original pin-up drawing! You can find it in the version drop menu when you go to buy. (And indeed, several of you already have.) I did this with the first book as well... in fact, some of the drawings in this book are ones I did for Headcanon I buyers!
