Sam and Fuzzy Q & A: Tar Time Edition
Got a question you want answered? Just drop me an email with "Q & A" in the subject line!
"In Wednesday's and Friday's comic, I couldn't help but notice the Picture Sam has hanging in 'his' office is him and Fuzzy sitting on the cab. My first thoughts were, 'Who took this picture for them?' and 'How did Sam even get the picture in the first place?'
If it's a painting, who commissioned it? Where does Fuzzy even factor into this hypothetical world? I'm sure that last question will be answered in time." -Kell
Ah, I see what's causing the confusion, here. The truth is, it's not a photo at all. It's a drawing! I drew it for him.
Hope that clears this up!
"Why does Candice herself believe she's just a shadow? Even if she were, at heart, a totally different person now--a confused piece of Brain's essence, say--she's still got all the memories of Candice... all the values and wishes of Candice... she's got everything from the real Candice such that she'd believe she is Candice even if she weren't.
If I died and turned into a ghost I wouldn't think, 'Wait, no, I'm not Lemma; she died! I must be someone else. Who inherited her memories. And preferences.'
This subject gets philosophical quick, which doesn't really fit the Q&A format, alas, but I feel like we've glossed over something important: Irrespective of whether minds absorbed by Brain and Hart are really the original people or not, why does Candice in particular believe she isn't the real Candice? -Lemma
It's just the nature of the beast! Or, er, the demon. Brain and Hart can read, edit, and copy memories. By merit of being a part of Hart, she knows she is a copy, and not like... a ghost or something. And based on things Brain and Hart have said, I think she's probably not a complete copy, either, but more like an imprint of the strongest parts of Candice's personality and memories at the time.
"So, now that we know what the tar IS, I feel that raises a few other questions. Has the tar always existed in the S&M universe or did it "leak" in from ours? Is there a theoretical connection between the two universes? And, regarding the Pit, were the tar and the Pit always there or was the Pit built by the Committee to house the tar? Finally, was the tar contained within the Pit or was it actually covering a much larger area, as Hart claims (possibly the whole world)?" -Jeremy
As far as the tar's location goes... I think there are veins of tar running deep underground around the world. There have been various smaller, localized breaches throughout history, which various inhumans have sprung from and various humans have messed with. But the pit is an astronomically larger individual deposit than any other one that anyone has ever found.
As for where it originally comes from... there was a time when I was considering suggesting it was originally a meteor, but ultimately I decided it was more fun to leave it unexplained. That said, Mr. Sin was an alien, so we do know that weird inhuman life exists off-planet in the S&F universe, too!
That's all for this week, team! See you on Monday.
