Jesse's Girl

Today's throwback holiday special is from 2019 -- no, I am not running them in chronological order, ha ha -- and was the very first story I drew after completing the main Sam and Fuzzy saga! At that point, it had been many years since I'd been able to do a proper Christmas story, because I was always right in the middle of some big non-Holiday-themed chapter whenever December rolled around. So I was happy to be able to do one again! This time around, I've included some cover art, which I originally drew back then as a Patreon bonus.

This story also served as a test to see how future "Dev and Jess" stories might work. (Up until that point, the characters had not been paired together very often, which seems so crazy to me now!) I'm quite fond of this one... in addition to being the start of a beautiful friendship, I also like how much it feels like an actual sitcom "Christmas Episode."

In other news, I wanted to share this little sketch I drew yesterday after watching the new Superman trailer! Obviously, Jesi and I are big fans of scruffy dogs, so we are pretty delighted about Krypto. We were at the hospital yesterday for round 2 of Jesi's chemo, and I actually just drew this on the iPad right there in the hospital while I was sitting with them.

Anyhoo, that's all for this week. But see you on Monday for more "holiday antics".

Clause shave

I suppose today's Santa Clause parody could have just been a normal update in and of itself. But as you have seen, it also served as an extremely natural lead-in to a rerun of another classic Sam and Fuzzy Christmas story!

This particular one is from the far off year of 2003... three years after I drew the story about Trevor and the bunnies that I shared on Monday. The art in this one is still pretty rough around the edges, but man... what a difference three years makes, huh?

I hope you all are doing well. As you can imagine, this is going to be an unusual Christmas for us. But fortunately, our folks are able to join us here for the holidays, so we can all make sure Jesi has the best holiday possible. We won't even make Jesi watch The Santa Clause. (Unless they say it's ok.)

'til next time.

Xmas Throwback

Since I'm not going to be able to make a new Christmas special this year, I thought it might be fun to revisit some old holiday material. So let's go back... way back... to the year 2000, when I drew this pre-webcomic Sam and Fuzzy story a few months after graduating highschool.

The biggest novelty of this comic is the appearance of Trevor... a character who didn't make it into the Sam and Fuzzy webcomic until year eighteen. In this old comic, he was a pretty one note parody of a particular kind of right-wing crank. A couple of years later, this take was already feeling dated... although at this point, it has maybe wrapped back around to feeling uncomfortably familiar. In any event, Malcolm took the role of conspiracy theorist in the webcomic, so I didn't have much use for Trevor until I radically re-invented him eighteen years later.

The other notable thing about this comic, at least to me, is how similar Fuzzy is to Max from Sam and Max. Although Sam and Fuzzy were originally created as a childhood diary comic long before I had heard of Sam and Max, they definitely went through an extremely Sam and Max-y phase in the late 90s when I was first trying to transform them from diary comics to stand-alone characters.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed seeing (or revisiting) this ancient piece of holiday "magic" more than Trevor and Fuzzy did.

Meanwhile, holiday deadlines are fast approaching in my online store! They are:

We are past the point where we can guarantee pre-xmas arrival for our non-US buyers, but Americans still have a chance with UPS 3-day!
